June 2011

28th June 2011

Dear Parents

What a wonderful Sports Day we had!  We were so lucky with the weather and it was such a pleasure to see so many parents, grandparents and friends there to support our children.  Huge thanks go to Nadja Hamilton and Nicola Barrett for all their hard work with organising the fête and thank you to everyone who helped.  If anyone has any photographs of the day please could you forward them to me at so that I can not only use them for our website but also include them in a photographic diary that I am keeping for the school.  Thank you.

Some sad news is that Mrs Keri Fuge, our lovely music teacher, will be leaving us at the end of term to concentrate on her singing career.  We will be sorry to lose her and I am very grateful to her for all her help and support over the past year. We wish her every success in the future and look forward to seeing her name up in lights.  Mrs Helen Campbell, our music teacher from St Colette’s, will be replacing Mrs Fuge and we are all looking forward to working with her again.  Next year Mrs. Campbell will be offering individual guitar, piano, violin and recorder lessons. The lessons are of 25minutes duration and ten will be given each term at a cost of £132.00 per term.  Please could you let me know if you would like your son or daughter to learn a musical instrument next year and Mrs. Campbell will ring you to discuss the exact arrangements.

This term finishes at 12.00 on Friday 8th July 2011.  Playscheme will start at 12.00 on that day for those that require it and will continue until Friday 2nd September 2011.  It would be very helpful if places were booked and paid for in advance as this makes it much easier to organise staffing.  Please could you submit payment, either cash, cheque of childcare voucher transfer, along with the booking form which will be available on the website.

Could I please ask you to refer to our school website for information and updates about school fees and any other changes that might occur over the summer holiday.

Mrs Ruth McAlinden has very kindly taken on the role of our school photographer and she has produced a wonderful official school photograph to celebrate the end of our first year as The Phoenix School Cambridge.  A list of available sizes and prices will be in the school bags and a copy of the picture can be viewed in the school office.  Please return your order forms to your child’s class teacher.  Also in the office are order forms for school uniform for next year.  We will continue to sell the current uniform with a 50% reduction to current parents up until the end of term so it is well worth taking advantage of this opportunity.

It is with deep regret and after much debate that the decision has been made to stop accessing the Nursery School Funding.  The rules governing eligibility to access the funds have become so suffocating that if we abided by them the school would suffer.  There are many other schools and playschemes in our area that are experiencing this dilemma and many of them are also withdrawing from the scheme.  If you have any queries relating to this please do not hesitate to contact me and I will do my utmost to help.

Our very first Speech Day as The Phoenix School Cambridge will be on Tuesday 5th July 2011 and will begin at 2.00pm.  It will be held at Willingham Baptist Church Hall, George Street, Willingham, CB24 5JL.  This is an opportunity to celebrate the successes of the past year and to say thank you for all the help and support that has been so freely and generously given by so many.  Our speaker will be Mr Phil Lomax who many of you will remember was instrumental in enabling us to set up The Phoenix School Cambridge.  Phil helped us to negotiate the purchase of all the school equipment for £1 and without this we would not have been able to open.  I shall be forever indebted to Phil for his kindness when considering the equipment that would be available to us, for ensuring that we had all the reading schemes that are so vital to our children’s learning and for the way that he rolled up his shirt sleeves in order to help us with the removal of all the equipment that we so desperately needed.  Having Phil as our first speaker is the perfect way to thank him for all support that he has given us.

The forthcoming summer holiday is almost upon us and it is going to be a busy time for the school to organise itself for the coming new academic year.  Our current Year 1 children will become Year 2 and they will be joined by our current Reception Class as Year 1.  This class will be accommodated in the Beech Room and Room 15 which, over the holiday, will have the adjoining wall removed to provide a large, spacious classroom with its own facilities and access to the garden.  The class will continue to be taught by Mrs Harvey and myself along with Mrs Tricia Peroni as our Teaching Assistant.   We are all looking forward to seeing our children grow and flourish in the coming year.  Mrs Cooke will continue to teach the Reception, Transition and Nursery classes ably assisted by Mrs Dixon and Miss Washbourne.

The coming two weeks leading up to the end of term are going to be busy and exciting and I am looking forward to seeing the children practise and hone their performances for Speech Day.  If you have any queries about any of the areas covered in this letter please do not hesitate to contact me.

With best wishes
